WHAT EXACTLY IS A LAB-CREATED DIAMOND?

Lab-grown diamonds are created in a laboratory or factory rather than occurring in nature and mined from the earth.
They are real diamond that are made by scientists who recreate the same circumstances used by nature, only this process takes a few months instead of millions of years.
Some synthetic diamond laboratories use advanced technology to mimic the conditions that natural diamonds undergo when they form beneath the earth’s crust. This origin story is the main factor that sets synthetic diamonds apart from natural ones, since synthetic diamonds have essentially all of the same chemical, optical and physical properties and crystal structure as natural diamonds.

ARE THEY REAL DIAMONDS?

Lab grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds.
The long answer is that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defines a diamond as pure crystallized carbon in the isometric cubic system, whether it is mined from the earth or grown in a lab. The FTC has chosen this definition of a diamond as both lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds have the same chemical, optical and physical properties.
They have shape, size, color and clarity grades, just like Natural Diamonds and both come with diamond certifications.
Lab grown diamonds are identical to diamonds found in the earth in every way. Both share the same qualities and characteristics such as:

Crystalline Structure: Cubic
Refractive Index: 2.42
Dispersion: 0.044
Hardness (MOHS): 10
Density: 3.52
So whether it is mined or grown in a lab, a diamond is a diamond.

ARE LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS CERTIFIED?

Lab-created diamonds are graded and certified using the same process as mined diamonds.

Diamonds are sent to a gem lab that specializes in grading diamonds. The majority of these labs grade using the 4c’s (cut, clarity, color, and carat — more on those later).

The diamond grading process is roughly the same for all of the diamond certification labs. Each diamond is graded independently by several gemologists at the lab. The individual grades are compiled and analyzed to determine the final grade.

Since Lab Grown Diamonds are the same chemically as a natural Diamond, they come with certification.

HOW CAN I TELL THE DIFFERENCE?

NO,

There is no visible difference between lab-grown and earth-grown natural diamonds. Even a professional gemologist will need specialized equipment to tell which is which. With magnification, a professional will be able to make out small contrasts in the inclusions of lab-grown vs. mined diamonds.
